Three Long Years

Posted in Personal at 11:14 pm by Abbas

After serving as the Muslim Students Association’s President for three long years I will be leaving due to graduation. Alhamdulillah, we have managed to put on good quality events with speakers like Hamza Yusuf, Hassanain Rajabali, Dr. Normal Finkelstein, Dr Shahid Alam, Adam Shapiro, Rabbi Dovid Weiss, Abdul Malik, Zayd Shakir, Maryam Shabani, and so forth, managed to get halaal food on campus, maintained regular jummah sessions, and increased our membership. However, there has also been some tension.

With the elections over, and the results in we will have a very interesting year ahead of us. We have three Salafis, two Sunnis, one Shi’a and a VP not yet chosen. I pray the unity continues and we continue to strive and make improvement.

Wow, you were the MSA president?! A Shi’a msa pres? Man, I wish I went to your school! People here are so ignorant and would never vote a Shi’a on the the eboard

Alhamdulillah, that I was given the opportunity. It was a great experience. You just have to be sincere and devoted and be rational and logical at the same time. With this idea, I believe you can do and accomplish almost anything. It worked for me and I am sure it can work for others.

You’re right, our new VP is Shii. I think I’m going to get more involved next year to help out.

Yep, its always helps to get involved. People usually complain that MSAs are wahabi-dominated.. well, if that is the case then whos fault is that? Its our own fault for not getting involved.

The same can’t be said about my MSA Abbas. Since I was a freshman, I had tried to get involved. But they knew I was all gungho Shi’a and never voted me in everytime I ran, even though I was more qualified than the others. As for you-know-who, She was voted in for obvious reasons! :hijabi:

    Sarah,

Every MSA is different. With some you need a gradual process, and with others (ie. Univ. of Toronto, and UMich - Dearborn) you need a more radical approach. Both of those schools have a TMA (thaqalain muslim association - ie shi’a group).

We should put together a step by step process on how to build a tolerant MSA. It should be part of a Muslim Student handbook. And to those that say it’s not possible… nothing is impossible.

    Wa Salaam,
    Ali
