Recitation of Du’a Kumayl
Usually every thursday night, that is when it is reccommended by the Ahlul Bayt (a) to recite it, a bunch of us gather together and read a special du’a known as Du’a Kumayl. It is very passionate, emotional, and deep. Alhamdulillah, I am very glad that this particular du’a exists and many Muslims recite. It takes around thirty minutes to recite and we all take turns. I just wanted to share a small excerpt from it, inshaAllah.

“…So, my Lord! I look earnestly towards Thee and towards Thee, my Lord! I have stretched forth my hands therefore, by Thy honour, respond to my supplication and let me attain my wishes and, by Thy bounty, frustrate not my hopes and protect me from the evils of my enemies, from among the jinns and mankind o’ Thou! Who readily pleased, forgive one who owns nothing but supplication for Thou doest what Thou willest o’ Thou!
Whose Name is the remedy (for all ills) and Whose remembrance is a sure cure for all ailments and obedience to Whom makes one self sufficient; have mercy on one whose only asset is hope and whose only armour is lamentation O’ Thou! Who perfecteth all bounties and Who wardeth off all misfortunes!
O’ Light! Who illuminateth those who are in bewilderment! O’ Omniscient! Who knoweth without (acquisition of) learning! Bless Mohammed and the Descendants of Mohammed and do unto me in accordance with that which befitteth Thee…”

Salaam,
We are indeed honored that the Holy Prophet (saw) and his beloved progeny have left us with such invocations, because no one else on this earth would have been more qualified to show us the pathways of establishing communication with our Creator were it not for them. The humility with which Imam Ali (a.s.) invokes the forgiveness and compassion of the Almighty Allah (swt) cannot be described in words, it must be felt with the heart.
Just a thought that came to mind when I was looking over the post.. The nature of a human being causes him to seek divine intervention through prayer and supplication when he is at a difficult or trying time in his life.. Or, if not that, then one resorts to imploring the Divine when he wishes to attain his legitimate desires.. How often, though, do we use supplications, such as this one, to strengthen our relationship with Allah (swt)? According to the examples set forth by the Prophet (saw), we find that supplicating to Allah (swt) is called for not only to attain any worldy desire, but sometimes it involves us seeking help from Allah (swt) to detach ourselves from the world, so that the curtains are lifted from our eyes and we can begin to comprehend the true nature of our existence.. How often do we implore Allah (swt) to remove certain worldly distractions or goods from our lives, if the removal of those things will cause us to have a stronger relationship with Him, and sever the (sometimes harmful) relationships we have with the things that He’s created?
I sincerely pray that we all can someday achieve that clear understanding of the nature of our existence, and posess a true fear of Allah (swt), a fear not of His wrath, but that of His displeasure; one that embeds itself deep within our hearts and souls, and makes us tremble at the thought of displeasing the One who has put us into existence when we were nothing, and has allowed us to become recipients of His infinite treasures, though we are most unworthy.. Ameen..
Keep up the interesting posts and thoughts Abbas..
Nas’alakumu du’a,
Abbas
